Are Canadians happy I (American) have Canadian film collection?

By admin On March 10, 2010 5 COMMENTs

And on my shelf I have Bon Cop Bad Cop, the Sweet HEreafter, My Winnipeg, Paschendaele, One Week, Meatballs,

Do Canadians like these films? I also am mixing it with Dutch films like Soldier of Orange, and Danish films like "Babette’s Feast", and Swedish films like ‘Together"

and I’m expanding the free world’s cinema collection, The Free World as in ALLL these other countries that are non-USA because USA is only #15 in freedom and democracy and human development.

I want to get a glimpse through film of life in the countries where the human development index is rated hire than in the U.S.

Do Canadians like that I’m doing this?
I find far more non-US films that stick with your forever than American films, not to say USA Hollywood didn’t have amazing pasttime films from Stephen Speilberg and some have been really clever, perhaps Brokeback Mountain was a classic out

Where did the term African-American come from, and why did it replace Black or Colured?

By admin On March 9, 2010 11 COMMENTs

I’m sure some of you clicked on this to feast on the racism inside, but you’ll have to look elsewhere.

This is a genuine question; is it that people were so afraid of being labelled racist that they felt they couldn’t even use the term "Black"? I honestly don’t mean to offend anybody, but "African-American" pisses me off every time I hear it (thankfully I’m in the UK, so that’s not often)… 99% of black Americans are as African as I am German – never even been to the place. Why has the American media taken to calling people what they’re not rather than what they are?!

It came from black activists needing something to complain about. I remember Al Sharpton saying something about why are we called black, we aren’t even black. So whites not wanting to offend blacks use the new term. But of course like one answer above me,

Why do Christians who condemn Halloween not realize that it is post-Christian American culture that made it?

By admin On March 8, 2010 10 COMMENTs

Not pagans.

Halloween comes from All Saint’s Day which was a Catholic celebration and also two days later somewhat All Soul’s Day which celebrated those who had passed sort of another funeral feast but for all passed souls.

Prior to that Samhain, meaning simply "End of summer" was popular in Ireland and Celtic lands, which was somewhat different than our even scarier "Halloween" was a time to honor ancestors and the harvest, and a time that was believed that spirits could roam the land more freely. The Féile na Marbh, "Feast of the dead", was celebrated on Samhain. It was like a funeral feast, but in the sense of spirits of ancestors and other spirits.

Therefore many on Samhain sat around bonfires and masks to SCARE off evil spirits, similar to gargoyles, not to attract them or be demonic. They also honored their dead.

There were many other pagan holidays that were more

Should intellectual property rights be stripped to stop global warming?

By admin On March 7, 2010 11 COMMENTs

Not only are international hands being extended to collect funds from countries like the United States in order to help poorer nations deal with a problem that might actually be disappearing since global temperatures peaked in 1998, but climate change is also being used as a means of stripping intellectual property rights from companies that have created new more eco-friendly energy technologies.

Feast your eyes on the following report from Bali by the Associated Press Wednesday under the headline "Poor Nations Demand Climate Technology"

Developing nations at the U.N. Climate Change Conference demanded rapid transfers of technology Wednesday to help them combat global warming, while a report warned that some of Asia’s biggest cities could be threatened by rising sea levels.

[...]

Delegates and activists led by the Group of 77, which represents 132 mainly developing countries and China, said barriers such as intellectual property rights and a lack of a sense of urgency

Sandra Bullock Recieves American Riviera Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival

By admin On March 7, 2010 3 COMMENTs

Day two of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival rolls out the red carpet for one of Hollywood’s biggest and brightest stars.

Oscar nominee Sandra Bullock was honored at the film fest Friday night.

It was a great night for her fans, who were just lining the streets to get a glimpse of her.

There were easily a couple hundred fans helping her celebrate her big night in Santa Barbara.

They were heard loud and clear as Sandra Bullock made her return to the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

The flash bulbs were popping as the Golden Globe winner walked the red carpet on her way to accepting the American Rivera Award, which recognizes actors who have had a strong influence on American cinema.

“Pretty extraordinary because it’s about filmmaking and the work, not about what designer you’re wearing or who you slept with or how bad your work was,” said Bullock. “It’s enjoying the process.”
